Home of the Brave Quilts - Brenda Hubler is the Michigan coordinator for this project, which
was begun in 2005 by Don Beld, a quilter and historian, in Redlands, CA, to honor American servicemen and women who have sacrificed
their lives for our country. To date, 158 soldiers, who listed Michigan as their home state, have lost their lives in the
war.
In gratitude for their service and sacrifice, the group is making replicas based on the Civil War U. S. Sanitary Commission
Quilt to present to the next of kin of those soldiers who gave their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Sanitary Commission quilts measured 48 x 84 inches. These quilts were used as bedrolls and covers on the cots in military
hospitals. The block pattern for these quilts is known by several names, Cross X, Album, or Old Italian. See a picture of
a finished quilt. There are many ways that you can help with this project: donating supplies (fabric for squares, sashing,
backing and binding, batting, thread etc.), making quilt blocks, assembling tops, quilting (by hand or machine) , or even
making an entire quilt from start to finish. You don't have to be an experienced quilter to participate; even those of you
with basic sewing skills can help out. In keeping with the "period" of the original quilts the organizers ask that the fabrics
are either Civil War Reproduction or something similar such as muted tones of blue, red, brown, or gray. Financial donations
for supplies and postage are greatly appreciated as well. However, please note that this is NOT a non-profit organization,
therefore, your donations are not tax deductible.

on the group's website under State Coordinators – Michigan.
