The Storybook Quilt Project

The Storybook and Quilt Project of the Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild was developed with the purpose of providing a unique set of visual aids for use in schools in the greater Ann Arbor area. Each one of the stories in the books chosen has some reference to a quilt. Members of the GAAQG have made quilts to illustrate the books. The books can be used with all level of readers from picture books, "I Can Read" books, and more advanced chapter books. We hope that teachers will be able to use these books to acquaint their students with various types of quilts as well as the use and development of quilts throughout our history.

The Josefina Story Quilt by Eleanor Coerr and The Quilt Block History of Pioneer Days are both excellent books to use in studying the history of our country. The Pumpkin Blanket by Deborah Turney Zagwyn, and Reuben and the Quilt by Merle Good and illustrated by P. Buckley Moss would be good references for the artistic illustrations and possibilities. Elmer Again by David McKee, and Bizzy Bones and the Lost Quilt by Jacqueline Briggs Martin are wonderful picture books to read to our youngest students. Other books in the collection feature different ethnic groups including Russian, Amish, African American, and Hawaiian. Because of the basic geometric shapes of many quilts, we hope that math teachers will also find these books and quilts to be an excellent visual resource.

For information on how to borrow these books and quilts please contact Carol Spaly at (734) 769-3511 or at bspaly@aol.com.
