Make Your Safe House Quilts! --
A message from our President
Our bylaws
state that one of our guild’s three goals is "to engage in charitable efforts" and our Guild Policy and Procedures
state that "each member is asked to make a Safe House quilt annually."
To encourage Safe
House quilt production, we have lots of free fabric (including preselected starter kits) and many members willing to help
in various ways. Safe House quilts are a perfect way to explore new techniques, new color combinations and new styles. If
you are a new quilter you can practice your piecing or your machine quilting. If you prefer quilt construction to actually
quilting the piece, make two or three tops and partner with someone who wants to practice their machine quilting. If you can’t
afford the batting for your Safe House quilts, we also have a slush fund to help cover your expenses (stop by the Safe House
table on Quilt Day to inquire). The only thing that you really need to donate is your time and this should be a labor of love.
There is only one rule: the size must be a minimum
of 60" x 80" (no lap or baby quilts).
We have a list of members willing to machine quilt Safe House quilts. A quilter may gladly donate her services for 4 quilts
a year, but if you are bringing quilt number 5 it’s not appropriate to assume it will also be quilted for free. Please
consult the list to review the terms and then clearly discuss terms and arrangements prior to engaging a quilter’s services.
The list will be available at the Safe House Table, and we’ll try publish it a few times a year in the newsletter.
Safe House donation letters are also available at the
Safe House table but you must ask for one. I encourage you to talk to your tax accountant about determining the value of a
Safe House Quilt before you complete a form (e.g. you can’t count value of free fabric, or typically, your time).
Give yourself permission to really explore something
you’ve wanted to try and enjoy the process!
