Congratulations to Marie Ware for Best of Show!

Kudos to Marie Ware who was awarded Best of Show in Arts and Crafts at the National Model Railroad Association’s Mid-Central Region Convention during May in Cincinnati, OH. The judges awarded her wall quilt “A Capitol Fourth” 123 out of a possible 125 points, based on their three categories of evaluation. Amazing work, Marie!

Chicken Challenge. Chickens have often found their way into the quilt world — small wonder given the astonishing variety of plumage in chicken breeds. Among the most memorable poultry quilts are the charming chickens and roosters (and turkeys and ducks) created by Ruth McDowell (www.ruthbmcdowell.com). Join us in poultry piecing to celebrate these barnyard wonders!

Ann Shaw’s quilts are inspired by favorite photographs, family events, and various professional collaborations (e.g. the primate quilts). All of these quilts use paper piecing techniques to create an abstract interpretation of the photo or object — be it car, plant or animal. Based on the design and piecing techniques of Ruth McDowell, these designs take traditional patchwork a step further through the use of unexpected fabric choices. In this class, you will select from several patterns to create a wall hanging. A brief discussion introduces the methods and techniques of freezer paper templates. You will then prepare a freezer paper template for your pattern and begin the process of selecting fabrics for your design. We will also discuss sewing methods and sewing order to complete your wall hanging.

Registration

Workshops are open to both guild members and non-guild members. Because the cost of the workshops is subsidized by members’ dues, non-members are asked to pay an additional $15 per workshop. Non-members will be able to register for all 2020 workshops after December 1, 2019. Workshop registration policy.

Members: $75 + $2.50 credit card processing fee

Non-Members: $90 + $2.90 credit card processing fee

“Playing with Fabrics”

Lecture description: Unusual fabric choices is a hallmark of my pictorial quilt style. In this presentation, I will discuss the design qualities inherent in printed fabrics and the ways fabric choices contribute to the overall visual impact of a quilt. Quilts from many ears as well as my own work serve to illustrate how I select and audition printed fabrics that bring pictorial quilts to life.

This lecture follows the business meeting on Quilt Day.

Following our March 21 Quilt Day Meeting and Lecture, please stay for the SafeHouse Sewing Event. Quilt kits are being made up for your use. No fabric needed, although you will need to being basic sewing supplies. Feel free to sew with a friend or group. If you don’t want to bring your machine, we always need help with cutting and pressing.
