Event Details

Appropriate level: Beginner

This hands-on class will teach you the basics of ruler-guided free motion quilting using your home sewing machine. We will cover straight line ruler work and curved ruler work, as well as some free motion quilting designs to “fill-in” the framework we create with our ruler work. We will also learn how to audition your ruler work designs on paper before taking them to fabric. This class will give you the skills to create block and border designs using ruler work. “I will loan you rulers to use during class so you do not need to spend a lot of money to ‘try out’ the technique of ruler work!” Patsy will supply everyone w/a set of rulers (1 straight line ruler and 3 arc rulers) to use during class. The ruler-base courses will require the purchase of a ruler foot. You must have a true ruler foot for your machine to participate in this class. If your machine manufacturer does not yet offer a ruler foot, please seek the assistance of your dealer ahead of class so a foot can be ordered for you. Your machine must be capable of free-motion quilting. You must have an extension table for your sewing machine. You do NOT need to have free-motion quilting experience to take the beginning ruler work class.

Patsy Thompson is from Holland, Ohio. Her work has been exhibited in quilt shows and juried exhibitions across the United States, including the American Quilter’s Society show in Paducah, Kentucky. Her specialty is free-motion quilting on a domestic machine. She has developed a number of workshops and video tutorials for using rulers and templates when free-motion quilting on a domestic machine.
