January President’s Letter
Written by Susan Schwandt, Dec 29, 2018
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed holiday celebrations filled with love, joy and creativity. It’s always challenging to keep New Year’s resolutions, but I have an easy one for you. Please make and keep a resolution to join us at the Jan. 19 Quilt Day meeting.
We’re excited to welcome our teacher and lecturer, Heather Jones: “Integrating Tradition with Modern Design.” Modern quilters often integrate traditional patterns, blocks and techniques in their quilts. Heather will guide us through an in-depth look at the process of merging tradition with modernity in quilting. She will discuss how she adds her own spin to traditional quilting components to make them fresh and modern, and share tips and techniques on how you can do so as well. It’s not too late to register for Heather’s Friday “Fly Away: Large Scale Piecing” and Sunday “From Inspiration to Design” workshops: https://www.gaaqg.com/our-events/workshops/.
Three times a year in Jan., March and Sept. our guild hosts SafeHouse Sewing events to make quilts for domestic violence survivors at the SafeHouse Center. Our Jan. event takes place after the guild meeting from 12:30-4:30 pm. Bring your sewing machines and basic sewing supplies. Sew a quilt kit or bring your own project, fabrics and patterns. If you don’t want to bring your machine, we also need quilters to press and cut fabrics. What a fun way to meet other guild members and support a great cause! Special thank you to the Ann Arbor Sewing Center for a generous SafeHouse Center fabric donation. To register for the SafeHouse Sewing event, please email Jan at email@example.com
If you’ve caught the travel bug, don’t miss Jean Shaw’s Quilt Day demonstration. Relive your favorite travel memories using photos, paint and muslin squares to create little “travel quilts.”
A reminder to those whose membership will end as of Dec. 30 or Dec. 31, 2018. Please log into the site and renew your membership prior to your membership ending to maintain access to the private information for guild members.
Lastly, we’ll be voting in our slate of officers for 2019. Please thank them for volunteering:
- VP Programs – Brenda Rigdon
- VP Membership – Janet Rost
- Treasurer – Pat Timberlake-Turk
- Secretary – Deb Truax
As your President, my personal goal is to make the Greater Ann Arbor Quilt Guild your source for quilting inspiration, support and creativity—and an oasis of peace in this turbulent world.
Your ideas and volunteer time are deeply appreciated, and I’ll see you at our January Quilt Day meeting.
