Special Exhibit “Monet Challenge”
by the Eight Mile Radius GAAQG Small Group
One of Claude Monet’s paintings, “Water Lilies 1916,” which resides
in the National Museum of Art, Tokyo, inspired this challenge
for Eight Mile Radius, a GAAQG design group.
The object of the challenge was to create an art quilt
inspired by the painting without copying it.
Techniques were chosen by each maker.
This is the group’s third challenge.
Members have a range of quilting experience.
They share their knowledge and appreciate
how each member approaches the challenges.
Eight Mile Radius was founded in 2017 by Isabel Das Gupta,
GAAQG's first small group coordinator.
The colors and the brushstrokes of Monet's painting inspired the colors and textures I created.

Silks, cottons for stability, pattern, and texture; flip and sew, applique, beading, and fancy sewing machine stitches are all in my quilt. The challenge pressed me to new vision and techniques.

Monet Lily Pad Quilt #2
My quilt took a more literal interpretation of the painting. Noriko Endo and Anne Loveless have books using confetti techniques. The frog, from my button box, found a home.
Original design made and quilted by Lori Rhode, 17.5" x 29.5"
Making an impression of an impressionist was difficult for this artistically challenged quilter. My stash and pieces from silk clothing were used. I finally said, "Enough, you're DONE!"

Yellow Water Lilies
The color, shapes, style, etc., of the painting influenced my creation. Made with a blue jelly roll, netting layer, and lilies of fabric squares, yarn, and buttons.
Original design made and quilted by Ilene Harris, 24" x 32"
I love Monet's paintings. The inspiration painting's water was painted in vertical strokes. I think of water as horizontal. So, I replicated the vertical water strokes with fabric.

Impression of an Impressionist
Looking at the inspiration piece vertically, I saw an arch. This frames my lily pond. (Arch pattern from "Simple Stained Glass Quilts," by Daphne Grieg & Susan Purney Mark)
