Joe Cunningham – Men and the Art of Quiltmaking

While quilting has been practiced almost exclusively by women, a few men have crept into the realm from time to time. This lecture tells why, and how, men have occasionally landed on the world of quilts. I will tell my own story and show my own quilts, while also providing some historical insight into this mystery. The lecture is illustrated with my own quilts and and pictures of men and their quilts in my book, “Men and the Art of Quiltmaking.”

Mary HoganAdventures in String Quilting

Adventures in String Quilting is a lecture/discussion/trunk show. String quilting can make use of leftovers, stash, unwanted UFOs, and of course, new fabrics. I use the term “string” to distinguish the irregular shapes welcomed in string piecing from the term “strip” which refers to precisely cut fabric – which can be obtained as precuts. I will discuss string quilting, particularly the many possibilities for creating design using simple arrangement of strings or highlighting certain parts of blocks. I’ve also explored many foundation types for string quilting and these will be discussed. Participants will leave the lecture with a new or renewed appreciation for the tradition of string piecing/quilting.

Carole Harris – My Journey as an Artistcarole-harris-portrait

Carole Harris is a fiber artist who has redefined and subverted the concepts of quilting to suit her own purposes. She extends the boundaries of the tradition beyond utilitarian usage through explorations that include other forms of stitchery, irregular shapes, textures, materials and objects. Her work has received numerous awards and has been exhibited and published extensively. Highlights include a 2014 solo exhibition at the Paint Creek Center for the Arts (Rochester, MI) and inclusion in the exhibition “The Sum of Many Parts: 25 Quiltmaker in 21st Century America” which toured China, where she was a guest lecturer.
