THIS IS A LIVE, ONLINE CLASS TAUGHT ON THE ZOOM PLATFORM

The lure of indigo is strong — the classic blue and white combination found in many Japanese textiles is cool, crisp, and so appealing. From classic kimonos to denim jeans, indigo has been used by many cultures for dyeing cloth, and the Japanese have refined the use of indigo to an art form. This is the class to use all those lovely blue and white shibori fabrics you’ve dyed yourself, or use carefully curated blue and white fabrics from your stash. Each participant will develop a simple geometric block design based on unfolded origami shapes, set a theme and create variations, and combine them into the beginning of a fresh and modern mini quilt top.

A required $10 kit fee will be payable directly to David. You will receive a link to his website when the kits are available. An optional blue and white fabric kit is available that includes vintage Japanese yukata cotton prints (price to be determined)

Supply List

The class runs from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM Eastern Time with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. The Zoom classroom opens at 9:00 AM and students should be online by 9:15 AM.

David Owen Hasting’s lecture at the Saturday May 22 Quilt Day meeting is titled “Minimal Design, Maximum Impact.” The modern quilting movement is evolving and changing, but one thing remains consistent: simple, spare design combined with thoughtful quilting make an outstanding combination. The lecture includes an overview of David’s process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquette). Examples are provided showing how he also takes inspiration from architecture. The techniques he presents are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs, and finally he shares his approach to walking foot quilting. This lecture is meant to provide inspiration for people who might be intrigued by the modern, minimal esthetic, but don’t know how to get started.

This is an online event on the Zoom platform.  A link will be sent to those who register prior to the event.

David will guide you through a creative process for designing your own modern abstract quilts, taking inspiration from architectural photos to develop dynamic and unique quilt designs. Using photos of architectural elements as inspiration, David will guide you through the steps to transform the lines and structure from a photo into a mini fabric quilt design. We will use the quilt-as-you-go method. David will demonstrate facing your quilt, which gives a modern finish. Your mini quilt can be the final product (frame it, hang it, or make a pillow cover later), or it can be a test for a larger quilt.

CLASS FILLED – contact workshopregistrar@gaaqg.com to be placed on a waitlist.
