String Quilt Style: Easy techniques and inspiring designs from strips, scraps and stash, by Mary M. Hogan.

GAAQG https://gaaqg.dev.nsgroupllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/006-1.jpg Mary Hogan is the queen of string quilting. If you aren’t familiar with the term “string quilting,” we are talking about strips of fabric – narrow, wide, long and short.

Mary’s first book is packed with creative designs, step-by-step instructions, colorful and detailed photos, and loads of tips to ensure your success. This book is a fabulous resource for both beginners and experienced quilters, inspiring you to sharpen your rotary cutter and fire up the sewing machine!

Mary evaluates and discusses many different types of string blocks, multiple layouts with helpful diagrams, string and color placement, foundations, and a multitude of other topics. All of this, plus 14 fun and beautiful quilt projects sure to get you planning several quilts. Use up all those strips (and yards!) of fabric you’ve been saving/hiding in boxes, bags, drawers, etc. for years, planning to use “sometime.”  And, even better, no precision piecing is required!

Whether your stash has batiks, solids, holiday prints, large florals, matching collections, or a total mish-mash of scraps from years of quilting and sewing, Mary can help you make a colorful and lovely quilt.  Learn from Mary’s many years of experience and great sense of color and design. A second book is in the works.

String Quilt Style is available at local quilt shops or from Landauer Publishing.

March 2017 Workshops

Mary Hogan is our featured instructor and will be teaching two workshops in March.  The Friday, March 17, workshop is “String Circles.” You can see a lovely example of this quilt on the front cover of her book. On Sunday, March 19, make time for her class, “Design Play Date.”

One of Carol Makielski’s “Design Play” pieces.

Last year, several friends and I helped Mary test her plans for this new class, “Design Play Date,” and we had a fabulous time!  You’ll bring several fat quarters of pre-fused fabric and some pieces of background fabric. Mary will lead you through a series of quick and fun exercises to help you develop and expand your color and design skills. After each exercise, we walked around the room and reviewed our work.  Class https://gaaqg.dev.nsgroupllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/006-1.jpgs critiqued their own pieces and shared ideas, led by Mary. You’ll make at least five pieces – each different. They may be geometric, modern, architectural, animals, landscapes, or indescribable – they are all different and lots of fun to make. You can turn them into separate mini-quilts, make a baby quilt or wall-hanging, or tuck them away to spur future creativity.

There’s still room in these March classes – I highly recommend both!  Both GAAQG https://gaaqg.dev.nsgroupllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/006-1.jpgs and non-https://gaaqg.dev.nsgroupllc.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/006-1.jpgs can register online.
