Mary Hogan’s lecture at the Saturday January 16 Quilt Day meeting is titled “What I’ve Learned from Making Siddi Quilts”. The Siddi (pronounced “seedy”) people are people of African descent who have lived in India for generations. They are known for making hand-pieced quilts known as “kawandi” to be used as sleeping mats or covers for their children. They are generally made by groups of women all working together on a single quilt, so it is much more than just functional sewing and becomes a community activity. Non-members may also register for a fee of $10.00.
This is an online event on the Zoom platform. A link will be sent to those who register prior to the event.

The Siddi people, an ethnic group originally from Africa but now living in India, make quilts in a distinctive way. These quilts are made completely by hand using scissors, fabric, needle and thread. That’s all you really need. Construction starts at the outside edges and fabrics are added while working towards the center. Mary will show you how these quilts are made, help you get started on a small project, and share tips, tools, and construction methods.
The class runs from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM Eastern Time with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. The Zoom classroom opens at 9:00 AM and students should be online by 9:15 AM.
