Skill Level: Beginning to Advanced. NOTE: This is a two-day class.
Using only two contrasting colors, learn how to construct the individual components used to make an improv Irene-style quilt. Discover how fun it is to make many types of stripes, triangles, squares and curves in new and original ways. You will take home a 20-24” pillow top or mini-quilt ready to quilt as well as all the techniques to jump into a full-size improv quilt.

On Saturday, March 18, 2023, Irene Roderick will present a lecture titled “Dancing With the Wall.”
Irene’s lecture is about her own quilting journey. She started quilting in 2016 and has made over 130 quilts beginning with more traditional piecing, then modern quilting and now contemporary quilting. It is about a 45 minute talk with a PowerPoint presentation, and time for questions.
Improv Quilting by Irene Roderick is also available, published by Penguin Random House, 2022.

Skill Level: All levels (even people with no sewing experience have had success with this class).
NOTE: This is a two-day workshop and you must sign up for both days.
Making a portrait in any medium can seem difficult. Michelle will guide you through a step-by-step process to create your realistic portrait in fabric. It’s easier than you think, and we’ll have lots of fun along the way! The first day you evaluate your photos, render a line drawing (don’t worry, you don’t have to draw them free hand!), and do a value study to prepare for color and fabric selection.
Michelle will share with you her view on color and the emotions color can evoke so that you feel confident choosing fabrics for day two. Near the end of day one, or that evening you will have your line drawing enlarged, select a background fabric, and transfer your line drawing to the fabric back. (No Worries! All will be explained!) The second day the portraits start to come to life.
You will learn how to make the pattern pieces and start to build the portrait a piece at a time. It’s so fun to see them start to look like real people! I hope you can join me on this adventure! – Michelle Jackson
This two-day workshop is in-person and runs from 9:30am-4:00pm on Friday and Sunday, with a half-hour break each day.
The workshop room is open at 9:00am for set up.

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Michelle Jackson will present a lecture titled “The Emotions of Color and How to Use Them.”
Why do we like certain colors or why do some colors make us feel calm and others give us energy? Colors can evoke many feelings including happiness, optimism, melancholy or sadness. This lecture is about our wonderful world of colors and how they affect our lives every day. As artists, we can learn to use color to evoke emotions and help the viewer see and feel what we want them to feel when viewing them.

Skill Level: Intermediate.
Mobius Radial is a wall hanging made using paper piecing, curved piecing, and partial seam techniques. This workshop covers the basic concepts of paper piecing on an arc, curved piecing, and precision piecing. We will also discuss quilting ideas. Students will learn the concepts of paper piecing on a curve. There will be a focus on curved piecing and partial seam construction. The students will complete a portion of the quilt during class. The Mobius Radial Quilt finishes at 30 x 30 inches.
We’ll be using the Swoop Quilt Block as an exercise to demonstrate and practice curved partial seams in class. Please see the Supply List for the fabric remnants needed for this test block. These can easily be selected from the scrap bin. An example block is pictured. This block is made with two feature fabrics and background fabric.

Skill Level: Beginning to Intermediate.
Machine embroidery adds personality to your quilts and needlework. The stitches you choose affect the emotion and atmosphere of your work. In this workshop we will make a simple sampler using a repeated leaf appliqué, but by changing the finishing embroidery stitches each leaf takes on different personalities and attitudes.
This is your chance to get familiar with the stitches contained in your sewing machine or to sample some stitches you have never tried before. Whatever machine you have, we will try to find the stitches which speak your language and will make your needle projects more expressive.
The workshop runs from 9:30am – 4:00pm Eastern Time with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. This workshop will be held in person.

“Under the Influence” is a lecture of the visual and philosophical ideas that have influenced me and my work. There is an extraordinary range of wonderful images. This is a very colorful lecture. Nature is an endless source of inspiration. In this class we will examine a wide variety of artists’ interpretations of nature before beginning to manipulate natural forms ourselves. Through a series of exercises we will experiment with abstraction and exaggeration to capture the essence and energy of your favorite flora and achieve dramatic visual effects.
Drawing skills are not needed but participants should have a strong interest in developing their own design language and unique visual symbols.
In this one-day class you will choose a plant subject to work through a set of design exercises. This subject needs to have a variety of elements to work with… like a blossom, stem, leaves, buds, etc. to make the exercises successful. Bring as many views and detailed (leaves, blossoms, overall, etc.) pictures as you can for each one. Our goal is to discover as much about the plant as we can before simplifying and exaggerating it for our own interpretation. Many folks bring their inspiration on a computer or iPad, which also allows us to look up images on the internet. Others bring 8.5” X 11” prints or snap shots. Personally, I prefer prints because you can spread them out and look at them easily and you don’t have to keep scrollingback and forth. Books, of course, are another way to go. Seed or bulb catalogs can be helpful, too.
This class is especially beneficial for the drawing impaired and the tragically literal.
