Quilt Show 2018 – Rock Around the Block: QUILTS – July 28-29, 2018
On July 28-29, 2018, GAAQG held its 15th Biennial Quilt Show, “Rock Around the Block: QUILTS” at the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College. Every even-numbered year, GAAQG members create items to enter into this non-juried show. Our show drew more than 1,200 quilt enthusiasts from throughout southeast Michigan and beyond. This dynamic show featured more than 250 member-made entries hung in the main show and Special Exhibits; 25 vendors, door prizes generously donated by our quilt show vendors, and a Silent Auction.
We celebrated the accomplishments of beginning and expert quilters alike. With a membership of nearly 300, the broad range of styles and quilts reflected the diversity of our members and the broader quilt-making world. Attendees saw traditional quilts, art quilts, mixed media quilts; quilts intended to be loved enthusiastically by children or taken to college; quilts intended for family heirlooms or eventual purchase by collectors; hand and machine piecing, hand and machine quilting, hand and machine applique; commercial fabrics and hand dyed fabrics; commercial patterns and original designs from the maker – they were all there!
More than 1,200 attendees voted for their favorite quilts among the entries. The Viewer’s Choice Winners were:
Third Place (tie):
Special Exhibits: Quilt Show 2018 also continued the celebration of the guild’s 30th anniversary, which took place in 2017, by displaying member entries in our “30 Something” challenge. These unique designs were first unveiled at the end of our anniversary year and were open to the public for the first time at the quilt show. Other special exhibits displayed the products of challenges from 2 small groups of GAAQG members. The Creative Seasons Fiber Arts Group showed “Creative Whispers,” and the 48103 Challenge Group displayed “Exploring Our Creativity in Quilting.”
Silent Auction: More than 300 beautiful and unique small quilted pieces were purchased from our Silent Auction. The quilters who displayed their work in the show graciously donated works of art as a fundraiser to help offset the cost of producing the show. Just like the larger show, these handcrafted items reflected the wonderful diversity of styles and techniques of our members.
Vendors: A variety of 25 vendors from Michigan and other states offered their wares.
Food: Sandwiches, salads, fruit and desserts were available for purchase during show hours.
We ROCK Quilts!
